When I first came across Osborne Macharia’s Afrofuturist project for the Design Indaba Conference, the first thing I noticed was the strength that each one of these women seem to possess. It’s obvious from each image, that every woman pictured is a force to be reckoned with. Titled MAGADI, Osborne’s latest work imagines former female circumcisers who abandon their profession to become trainers and instructors for young girls escaping early marriage. In addition to helping girls these women also focus on ethnic fashion.

If your unfamiliar with the term Afrofuturism it means “a movement in literature, music, art, etc., featuring futuristic or science fiction themes which incorporate elements of black history and culture.” Osborne Macharia is telling a story full of female empowerment that he hopes to one day see come to fruition. His use of vibrant color and powerful characters keeps the viewer enthralled entirely. View the rest of MAGADI below.
