Last updated:

California is a massive state with so much to see and enjoy. It can be hard to conquer it all in one trip because there are so many iconic destinations in the Golden State. You might love it so much that after seeing just a few of them, you may want to start looking for houses for sale in Los Angeles and heading out west. Here are 10 of the most iconic stops that should be on your California bucket list:

1. Golden Gate Bridge

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who can’t identify the Golden Gate Bridge instantly. This iconic piece of San Francisco history is considered by many to be the most beautiful bridge in the world. The design itself is so easily recognizable that it has become a symbol of the city of San Francisco, and millions of tourists visit it each year to snap a picture.

2. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the United States. The most breathtaking part of this destination is Yosemite Falls, a gorgeous waterfall that stands almost 2,500 feet high. If hiking and exploring nature is your thing, then this is an important stop on your tour of California.

3. Disneyland

One of the main attractions in California is Disneyland, a great destination for children and adults alike! This amusement park sets itself apart from other Disney attractions in the world, being the oldest park, as well as the only of the theme parks to be completed under the supervision of Walt Disney himself. You can spend a few days at Disneyland alone, so this might be a destination worth a separate trip to California.

4. Alcatraz

If you’re looking for a spooky destination, Alcatraz is the place for you. Upon Alcatraz Island sits the former site of a maximum security penitentiary. A tour of this facility will leave you feeling chills as you hear stories about one of the most haunted places in the United States. You might even experience a ghostly encounter on your journey!

5. The Hollywood Sign

A landmark of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign is an iconic piece of California history. Millions of people visit this tourist destination every year and make the trek up to the 45-foot tall sign. This is a definite must-see spot for visitors. For a unique experience, get an aerial view of the sign on a helicopter tour.

6. La Brea Tar Pits

Located next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the La Brea Tar Pits. For a trip back into the Ice Age, visit this cool, unique attraction. It’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. This is a great stop for any science buffs, who will find it intriguing and educational how animal bones have been preserved in the tar for centuries.

7. Big Sur

If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, Big Sur is your ultimate California destination. It is a stretch of the coastline that falls between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia mountains. This is the ultimate place for a relaxing drive on a warm night with the windows down or the top off. It’s definitely worth a visit and might be my top pick for fun things to do in California!

8. Santa Monica Pier

If you want to sit atop a ferris wheel or ride a roller coaster on your vacation, but you don’t want to run into Mickey Mouse along the way, look no further than Santa Monica Pier. From rides to food to a gorgeous view of the ocean, you’ll find everything you’re looking for right here. You might arrive and find this destination looks familiar, and that’s because it’s a popular filming location for many movies and TV shows! Who knows? You might see yourself in the background of the next summer blockbuster.

Another gorgeous natural destination, Lake Tahoe has some of the bluest water you’ll see in the state. For those who are looking to rough it on their trip to California, this is the perfect place to set up camp and enjoy water sports, fishing, or hiking. If you’re an avid skier, plan your trip for the winter months and enjoy the slopes.

A former mining town in the mountains of the Mojave Desert, Calico was settled in the 1880s and holds tons of history. It is said to be haunted, but you can see for yourself on one of their many ghost tours! Don’t believe it? Check this town out and see for yourself just how haunted it is.
