3 Tips For Planning Your Next Around The World Trip

Last updated:

If you have the opportunity to spend weeks, months, or even years, traveling the world, then you are incredibly fortunate. For most people, the commitments of work, family, and finances often take center stage, leaving very little time and money left for global travel. They will generally have to limit their vacation time to a couple of weeks every year.

But people do it all the time. As long as you have the freedom, motivation, and savings in the bank, there’s nothing stopping you from deciding to quit your job, sell your house fast, pack up, and hop on a plane to the country of your choice. Travel is one of the most liberating experiences you can have in life. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, builds character, and makes you a more confident, self-assured person. Everyone should take some time to see more of the world in their lifetime.

But embarking on a round-the-world trip takes a lot of planning. There are so many countries in the world and an endless range of possible routes and destinations. Although it might be tempting to just walk out your front door without a care or a plan, you might end up not making the most of your journey. To help you maximize your adventure, here are three tips for planning a round-the-world trip.

1. Set your affairs in order

When you’re backpacking through a remote jungle, the last thing you want is to be worrying about your mortgage payments or your career prospects when you return home. There are lots of ways to have an adventure. You could leave your job and sell your home to abandon all responsibilities, but in all likelihood, you might take a sabbatical from work and leave someone else to look after your home while abroad. Make sure you put a plan in place to keep everything ticking over while you’re away and leave a trusted friend or relative in charge of the most important things. This way you can focus on your travels and be safe in the knowledge that everything will carry on as usual.

2. Create an itinerary

When you’re traveling to the furthest corners of the globe, not everything will go to plan. You’ll meet new people and go on spontaneous adventures. But you should still create a travel itinerary before you leave. Make a list of all the countries and sights you want to visit and plot a rough time frame and route for traveling between them. You may well change your plan along the way, but having this itinerary will keep you focused as well as letting everyone back home know where you are.

3. Stay connected

If you’re traveling by yourself, you may find yourself getting lonely after a while. Even though you’ll be meeting new friends all the time, there’s a good chance you’ll miss your loved ones back home. Make sure you can stay connected and get in touch regularly. Research spots with WiFi in the towns you visit and arrange times for catch-ups with friends and family.
