To a greater or lesser extent, we are all visual beings, and that means experiencing a piece of art can cause a visceral reaction in us. Of course, the best art is a piece that truly strikes a chord with you on a deep emotional and spiritual level, one that nourishes your soul. Find out how to pick out such a piece with the advice below.

1.Listen to your gut.

Art is supremely subjective, which is a wonderful thing. In fact, you may think a piece is the best thing since sliced bread, while I may loathe it, and both of these reactions are totally valid.

What this means is art choosing art to display in your home can be a very freeing process. That is, you can pick it not on what you know about the technicalities of the piece or even the skill of the artist, but how it makes you feel. Deep down in your gut. In fact, when choosing art, always allow your gut reaction to speak to you, and to guide you. You won’t regret it.

2. View as much art as you can.

If your aim is to find a piece of art that truly nourishes your soul, then you need to see as many pieces as possible. After all, how will you know what genuinely resonates with you if you limit yourself to looking at only one or two styles?

Of course, there are several ways that you can go about viewing art. One is to hop online and look at past and current works on blogs and encyclopedia sites. In fact, doing so can be a great way to begin your art appreciation journey. The reason for this is because it costs nothing, and the images are often accompanied by commentary designed to provide you with some context and aid your understanding.

However, there really is nothing better than attending a gallery and museum in real life and observing the art, ‘in the flesh’ so to speak. In fact, sometimes, the images we see online cannot capture the scale, complexity, or texture of a piece.

With that in mind, it can also be helpful to establish a link with private vendors such as Park West Gallery, as well as spend some of your free time reviewing works in local museums. After all, the more art you get to see, the clearer your own tastes will become.

3. Pick a piece that you want to look at every single day.

Finally, when it comes to choosing an art piece that is genuinely soul-nourishing, you need to pick a work that you can look at every single day and find something new.

Now, I don’t necessarily mean that you need to find a new character or building like a Where’s Wally, but that the piece changes depending on the light it receives at different times of the day. Alternatively, a work that evokes different reactions in you depending on your emotional state can also be a good choice. In fact, if you can find such a piece, then you are most likely to have chosen a work that nourishes your soul.
