Home security is so important and there are a lot of simple things that you can do to reduce the chance of a break-in. Installing better locks on the door, putting in security lights, and adding an alarm system are all great ways to secure your home. However, burglars are creative and there are a lot of different ways that they can get into your home. There are a lot of security risks that homeowners forget or simply do not know about, and that puts you at risk. These are some of the security measures that you might have missed around your home.

1. The Upper Windows

Most people know that they need to secure the doors and the windows on the ground floor, but they assume that nobody is likely to get up to the windows on the upper floors of the house. But you would be surprised at the lengths that people would go to, so it’s important that you secure all of the windows. When you are buying new windows for your home, make sure that you consider security as well as the aesthetic. You should also buy window alarms for all of the windows, not just ones on the ground floor.

2. The Garage Door

The garage is one of the main places that burglars will try to break in because they can get at your car, and it is often a route into the house. It’s a prime target because people tend to forget about it and they don’t take steps to secure the garage. If you haven’t paid much attention to your garage, you need to get a garage door repair company to come in and secure the outside door. If there is a door from the garage into your home, make sure that it is a sturdy door and you fit it with a heavy duty lock.

3. Trees

Trees are a great addition to your garden and they look great, but they can also be a security risk. If you have a tree that is close to the house, it is easy for people to climb up and get onto the roof of your house. If you also make the mistake of neglecting security on your upper windows, you give burglars a very easy route into your home. It may be worth cutting back the lower branches on the trees so people are not able to climb up.

4. The Shed

If you have a garden shed, you probably haven’t given much thought to security. But it’s very important that you put a sturdy padlock on your shed because if you don’t, you make it easier to break into your home. Firstly, there may be expensive power tools that could be stolen, but more importantly, those tools could be used to break into your home. If your shed isn’t locked up tight, you are just giving burglars a helping hand. It may even be worth storing more expensive items in the house if the shed is easy to get into.

If you want to make sure that your home is really secure, you need to fix these hidden security issues around the home.
