4 Signs You Shouldn’t Be Doing Your Own Taxes

Life is hectic, and at this time of year, you have your taxes to add to your list of stuff to do. Some taxpayers out there are lucky: they have simple tax situations, and they just have to submit their forms and bam – easy peasy!

The thing is, no one has the same tax situation. Yours may be more complex, and that means that you need to get some help! If your situation financially is more complicated than others, then there’s no shame in that. All you need to do is get in contact with a great CPA firm and have them do it for you. They’ll be able to walk you through the process while telling you what you need to provide for your taxes to go through just fine. It’s always better to consult with an expert than try to do it yourself and get it wrong. If you’re still not sure whether you should be the one doing your taxes, check out these four signs you shouldn’t!

1. If your life has changed immensely, such as getting married or buying a house, you need to speak to a professional. These are fantastic life events, but they can change the way you do your taxes, and you could easily forget these new morsels of life and continue as usual. Doing that will lead to possible fines, and that’s something you would really rather avoid!

2. When you own rental property, the rules change. It’s actually the most complicated of all situations that you could be in, and it’s one case where an accountant is going to be your favorite person. You should be up to date on how to file, but you want it to be right, and your rental could complicate things. You should try to get the best person possible to run your tax for you!

3. Congratulations on your new side gig: how exciting. It’s a great thing to do in your life, but starting your home business is going to complicate things for your taxes. The thing is, it doesn’t matter whether you earn a dime; you need to provide tax returns for your business. Without filling out the extra forms and documents, you are going to have so much more to think about.

4. You should always pass your tax returns over to someone else if you have failed in your past attempts to file. There are strengths and weaknesses in life, and yours doesn’t have to be in filing your tax returns. When you don’t file, you get into trouble, and it’s the type of trouble you want to avoid. Of course, you want to avoid charges of fraud because it’s slipped your mind, but that’s why accountants are around to help!

Tax returns do not have to be your forte. As long as you are leaning on the tax pros, you’re going to be just fine. Call the experts and know your own limits: it’s essential to get this part of the year right!
