4 Things To Consider When Buying A Home

Buying a house is one of the most stressful things we can accomplish in our adult lives. There are big decisions that need answers, compromises to be made, and practicalities to address. If you’re thinking about moving to a new house, then read on for some key things to consider.

1. Location

This is a huge part of deciding where to buy. You might not have a huge amount of choice in where you want to buy – restrictions such as schools, a commutable distance from work, travel to relatives can all play a huge part in determining the location of your new home. If you find yourself in the position of having to stick to a certain area but find yourself disappointed with what’s available, then all is not lost. Think about where you might be able to compromise on the property itself, and ask questions about whether you need the extra bedroom or utility room.

Otherwise, another option is to choose a property that requires updating and commit to doing the work over a period of time as and when you can afford to, which might be the best way you can get another property whilst still keeping the location you need.

Of course, if you have a wealth of choice regarding location, you can be faced with the different but no less daunting challenge of whittling down the possible areas to choose between.

2. Finance

The biggest hurdle that many people face when buying a new home. If you’re thinking, “Shall I sell my annuity?” or otherwise deliberating over financial concerns, it might be worth hiring a financial advisor who can point you in the right direction when it comes to making decisions about your mortgage and buying options.

Of course, it’s also worth considering that where you buy will have financial implications. If your new home is a long distance from the old one, then be sure to factor things in such as moving costs and trips to view the new property before making a final decision.

3. Storage Space

This is always worth bearing in mind whenever you view a property. Where are you going to put things? Especially in rooms such as the kitchen, where you might want mops and buckets, brooms and other cleaning supplies close at hand and readily available. There are plenty of ways you can resolve a lack of storage, but it’s a good idea to remind yourself to look when you view properties in the first place.

4. Which Way Does the House Face?

It’s hard to tell the difference in winter on a cloudy day between a north or south facing house and garden, but this will make a huge difference come summer. Everyone is searching for a house that’s flooded with sunlight and full of light and warmth, so don’t be shy about taking a compass when you view – you might even be able to get one on your phone for ease.
