Deciding to learn how to drive is a big commitment. You’re essentially learning a new life skill, which – if done well – will keep you and other drivers safe. Passing your driving test can seem a little daunting, but to do so confidently you’re going to need to complete a little research and get some advice before you set off on the road. From choosing the best transmission to knowing what to do if you’re involved in a car accident – you’ll need to get in touch with a company like this if you need legal advice – there are lots of ways you can prepare yourself for a life of motoring.

Read on for 4 essential tips for new drivers:

1. Get a Head Start.

You don’t need to wait until you book a lesson with an instructor to learn about driving. If you know someone with a car and who has passed their test then ask if you can sit in with them while they drive around or whilst they complete a maneuver, so you can see how they drive and what skills they’re using. Remember, it’s never too early to start studying for your theory test either. Get familiar with road signs, markings and what they mean. Knowing the theory basics will also give you confidence when you get behind the wheel for the very first time!

2. Choose an Instructor That Suits You.

Your friends might recommend the instructor that helped them pass their test, and as a result, you might feel pressured to go with them. Or maybe the instructor that helped your mum pass is still taking on students and your mum wants you to go with him.

Regardless of who recommends who, it’s important to make your own decision. People learn in different ways and while some students might like an instructor that is laid back and light hearted, other students might like someone more traditional. Do plenty of research and make your own choice!

3. Your Instructor Knows Best.

It’s pretty easy to be influenced by other drivers. For instance if you dad doesn’t really bother to indicate then it’s natural to copy his behavior. However, you need to remember that your instructor knows best, and while your dad might think that it’s pointless to indicate, your instructor is trying to keep you safe and help you pass your test! So always take their advice.

4. Get as Much Practice As You Can.

Some students who pick up driving very quickly, might only have a few lessons and then book their test. However, even if you are competent on the road, it’s important to get as much practice as you can with a qualified instructor.

That way, you’re prepared for certain scenarios, you know how to maneuver in busy city traffic, or you can drive on the motorway safely. Your instructor will know how many lessons you’re going to need but remember you don’t need to go in for your test until you’re comfortable.
