5 Habits to Start This Spring

The days are getting longer, the sun is just that little bit warmer, and if we’re very lucky, the time for snow is coming to an end. Spring is upon us, and just like spring-cleaning your apartment, now is the perfect time to spring-clean your life. We all know what winter can be like and how it can force you into unhealthy habits (no judgement – slobbing on the couch with a glass of wine and a few good movies all day is a dream during the colder months), but now it’s time to come out of hibernation, shake off the cobwebs and take hold of the new year with both hands!


However, changing your life is hard! It can be very overwhelming to make big choices about how you live every day – so here are five little things you can start to change and come out of that winter rut one step at a time.

1. Cooking on a Sunday

Batch cooking. If those words fill you with dread and the image of a hundred tupperware and thousands of dirty dishes piling high in the sink, don’t worry! We’re not talking an insta-worthy amount of food prep here. Whereas some people might prep all their food for the next three weeks, not everyone has the time for that… and yet buying lunches out every day will take a toll on your bank balance and your health. So let’s try for a compromise; every Sunday, take one hour out of your day to cook one big pot of something; stew, bolognese, or anything you fancy. Now, you have a tasty lunch or dinner for a few days, and you can still get lunch out once or twice! You’ll thank yourself for this one.

2. (Non-Alcoholic) Fun!

The best way to get out of a rut is to make plans with friends – but not all plans have to involve a bar or a club. Sure, there are the old classics; a movie, a walk in the park… but why not try something new! Trampoline parks aren’t just for kids these days. Other options include Escape Rooms, or if you want to get retro, ice skating and even bowling!

3. Rearrange that Space

You don’t have to fully redecorate to get that fresh feeling in your home. Try just moving a few items of furniture around – have your bed facing a different direction, or swap around the couch and the table in your lounge. You might find an arrangement you love… and the best thing is that if you don’t, you can always move them back!

4. Exercise Gently

Going to the gym every day – or even every few days – simply isn’t a realistic option for many of us. But before you start worrying or feeling guilty about this, consider a few different options for getting exercise back into your life! If you live close enough to work, why not try cycling there one day a week. If you like it, you can increase that to two days a week, and so on. Even if you do decide to hit the gym regularly, don’t forget to give yourself time and reasonable goals otherwise you’ll soon burn out. Rest days are invaluable – and if you want to remain active, try rest day yoga… or go for a dance with some friends!

5. A Saturday Alarm

It might seem like the worst idea ever, but if you tend to sleep in on a Saturday (hello, 11am coffee addicts) then consider setting an alarm. It can be a bit later than your work alarm (for example, 8am instead of 7am), but once you get past the pain, you’ll definitely thank yourself for those extra hours of weekend!
