5 Moving Tips for Graduates

Last updated:

You’ve got into college and you’re ready to study a subject/s that you are passionate about. Moving away from home is a big step that you have to take, so it’s important to get yourself organized and prepared for the changes that come with it.

But what do you need to do before the big move? Here is a handy list of the top 5 moving tips that you can follow to get you ready!

1. Make a list and start preparing early

After receiving the news that you’ve gotten into college, it’s important to make a list of what you need to bring. Moving all of your things into a (probably) smaller space might seem like a struggle for many. So you should declutter and only bring the things that you really need (as mentioned in tip 3 below).

It’s good to get organized early, no one likes a last minute rush after all – especially when it’s such an important step. Alongside making a list, you should start to look at where to live if you don’t get a room on campus.

 2. Make sure you have all of the correct documents

Alongside organizing where you will live and your clothes/other belongings, it’s important to make sure that you have all of the correct documents with you in order to enroll. Not only with you need your ID card, but also your health insurance card, social security card and more. You can find out the exact documents you need either by researching or by attending the college orientation day.

 3. Only bring what you need

You don’t need the entire contents of your room when you’re at college. You only need a few pairs of pants, shoes, shirts, skirts, etc. You probably won’t have as much storage (especially if you’re sharing a room with someone else), so you should only bring things that you really need. You don’t want to go over the top with clothes that (let’s face it) you won’t wear.

4. Purchase cooking/eating utensils

Unless you’re planning on eating out all of the time (which many won’t be able to afford), you should head out to your local Target (or wherever) and invest in some cooking and eating utensils. You will want to be able to cook your own meals, if not every day then occasionally. Buy knives, forks, plates and anything that you need to cook up a healthy and nutritious meal.

5. Hire a moving company to transport your things

If you don’t have a car that will fit your belongings, it’s a good idea to think about hiring a moving company. There are plenty of options around, no matter where you are located, at prices that will suit all budgets. A stress-free way to transport your things to the dorm, it will give you enough room to bring all of the essentials.

So, there you go! There is a list of the top 5 moving tips for students moving to college. You want to ensure that you have everything that you need and that you don’t leave the organizing to the day before you go. You’re moving away from home, therefore want to know that everything is sorted before you take the leap.

Whether you’re moving to a college that’s located nearby or across the country, you need to be prepared for what’s to come! It’s an exciting and incredible step for you to take, so you need to be able to say – “yeah, I think I’m ready for this”.
