 5 New Year’s Resolutions You Need to Be Making in Your 20’s

With New Year’s Eve comes a multitude of promises that we will make to improve our lives in the upcoming year. Many people view the new year as a time to grow or a time to start anew. That being said, here are 5 New Year’s Resolutions You Need to Be Making in Your 20’s.

1. Slow Down. This year, take a step back in order to make leaps forward. We are constantly on an agenda – one that often isn’t our own. We are rushed and accustomed to a fast paced lifestyle that leads to the expectation of instant gratification. In 2014, try to reduce your speed. I’m not encouraging you to be lazy, but rather, to focus on the necessary and important things. Instead of trying to fit a million things into your schedule, fit in the few things you value most – and work hard to perform them as best you can.

2. Be More Frugal. Money is often an issue for millenials. We don’t often have a lot of it and are still learning how to manage it. In 2014 start to save. Make the commitment to yourself that you will prepare for the future you want. Starting your own business is a great goal! But you’re going to need some funds to make that a reality. Start by eating out less or refraining from those shoes you really want but don’t need. Ultimately, you will end up closer to your dreams by saving a little now.

3. Be Comfortable Being UncomfortableI don’t believe you have to take these huge, irreversible risks in your 20’s (unless you really want to), but I do believe this is the time in your life to start going out of your comfort zone. Apply for jobs you aren’t necessarily qualified for but really want and know you can excel at. Work in places and with people who are different than you are and who will challenge you each day. Take on tasks that are more complicated than you’ve ever attempted. These are the things to start doing in 2014 because these are the things that are going to push you more than anything else.

4. Get In Touch With Nature. I understand that many people don’t always enjoy the outdoors – they don’t like camping, hiking, or being dirty – that’s okay! But I firmly believe that getting outside this year will improve your life in many ways. Our world is turning into more buildings. How many of us are cooped up in an office all day with no windows? Make small promises such as, “I will see one sunset/sunrise a week” or “I will go on a walk or visit a park once a month.” Remember, you don’t have to go out in the woods to experience nature.

5. Love Yourself. Each morning wake up and tell yourself how incredibly stunning you are. Look in the mirror and see how beautiful you’ve grown up to be, both inside and out. Don’t resent yourself for the cookies you ate or the workout you missed. In a world that is ever-changing and sometimes dreary, you deserve to smile more often. There will always be negative people, and understand that we can never change that. But 2014 is the year we resolve to love ourselves.
