5 Things To Consider When Buying Jewelry Online

Danasiafantastic Founder, Editor-in-Chief

With the ability to shop online, buying jewelry has never been easier!

With that in mind, there are certain things you need to consider when buying jewelry online.

Check out my list below of things to keep in mind when online jewelry shopping!

1. Consider Whether The Jewelry Was Ethically Sourced

If you’ve ever seen the movie Blood Diamond, you know just how unethical the jewelry industry was and is.

That’s why it’s important to do your research and purchase your jewelry from ethically sourced and sustainable brands!

I recently discovered a jewelry company called Aurate, that not only focuses on ethical sourcing and being sustainable but also focuses on hiring a diverse team of employees.

I’m obsessed with their gold earrings, and I’m currently waiting for the flower earrings pictured above to be delivered!

It’s important that you do your due diligence and shop from ethical brands.

2. Don’t Always Go for the Most Expensive, BUT Be Aware Of Discounted Diamonds.

You don’t have to sell your soul and break the bank to find quality jewelry online!

As long as you shop at a reputable online dealer, you should be able to find quality pieces that can fit your budget.

It helps to have an idea of what you’re after. Create a board a Pinterest with some of your favorite styles and pieces!

Personally, I’m a huge fan of Catbird NYC. They have beautifully made rings that I can’t get enough of!

When it comes to stones, you mainly go by weight, luminosity, and color.

A 2 carat diamond would be lovely, but it will set you back quite a bit depending on the quality and the cut.

Speaking of diamonds, it can be tempting to purchase a beautiful stone that’s been heavily discounted.

The truth is, if a diamond is on sale, there’s a good chance there is a reason for it.

This could be that it’s damaged in some way, has lost its sparkle, or isn’t a popular cut.

Usually, the main reason is that the diamond has in some way, shape or form lost its value.

If that’s the case, you won’t be able to trade up your stone later on.

3. Reconsider “Final Sale” when Buying Jewelry Online

Like discounted diamonds that you can’t trade up, you also need to be aware of “final sale” jewelry pieces.

Final sale pieces are often sold at a very generous discount.

In almost every situation, there is a catch.

And that catch is you cannot return the piece – no matter what.

So, if you are going to buy a final sale piece, make sure it’s the one you really want, it’s the right size, and there are no defects.

4. Don’t Be Put Off By Pre-Owned Items

As someone who loves antique and vintage pieces, I’m a huge fan of pre-owned items.

It’s like treasure hunting to me!

Typically, the piece is rare and has a great background story.

If you’re into having more one-of-the-kind items, this is a great option for you.

There is a huge market for pre-owned jewelry.

So don’t be put off by buying previously loved pieces.

You might get lucky and find something truly stunning for a fraction of the original cost.

You will find pieces that might have a little wear and tear, but stand out!

Often the most reputable dealers will only sell pre-owned items of the highest quality.

Therefore, there’s no reason not to consider a second-hand piece of jewelry that still has the ability to wow.

5. Make It A Point To Buy From Reputable Vendors

The reputation of the vendor you buy from is paramount.

Many unscrupulous dealers out there will take your money and send you an inferior product.

Some will photoshop their site’s images, and others will blatantly lie about the materials used.

So always be careful.

That said, it doesn’t necessarily need an over-the-top, intense experience.

Some of my favorite pieces I’ve purchased are from Mercari or Depop.

As long as the seller has high reviews and a good rating, sometimes it’s worth going for it.

You can also use Trustpilot.

If you don’t do your research before handing over a large amount of money, you risk your jewelry not even turning up at your home.

There are many considerations when buying jewelry online.

To avoid disappointment, buy within your means, be aware of “final sale” pieces and always buy from a reputable vendor.
