2020 has been a bit of a year, hasn’t it? No detail needed, as we’re all aware of the madness of the year, which doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.
However, just because we’ve all been stuck inside for the past 1323842984 days, doesn’t mean that this season doesn’t call for the opportunity to get to play around with your look a bit- even if you’re still staying home this fall. Sometimes there’s nothing better for our overall sense of fierce well being than looking in the mirror at something just a little different.
Even just a little change can make all the difference. Here are some of the ways you can create your own style overhaul this fall without breaking the bank.
1. Tame those Tresses
Salons are mostly back open now, and they’re operating safely enough that you can start to feel comfortable enough to go back safely (while wearing a mask, obviously!) to get that much needed pick me up for your hair. Hooray!
But what do you ask for when you finally make it back to the salon? Well, the fall is mainly about those warm colors, so reds, coppers, deep browns and purples. Choose colors and get yourself a sleek, low maintenance bob which will sit cutely above your scarf or fur lined jacket. Mix it up with short, choppy layers. Or, if you can’t stand being apart from your long locks, go for something else like a cool, grey balayage. All of these options come with their own nod to the fall vibes you’re looking for, and are easy to maintain.
Getting your hair cut into a style you love is a sure fire way to give you the boost you need this changing season.
2. Love Your Loungewear
If 2020 has added anything to most people’s dressers, it’s the addition of at least 3 more lounge sets as we all got used to spending more and more time in our homes. But now that the weather is set to turn on the colder side, it’s time to pack away those cute little short and cami sets and make way for the soft, light knitwear loungewear.
Plenty of online retailers have bought into the hype and understanding that while we’re all home, we want to be comfortable, and stylish enough to be able to put our cameras on for all of those video conference calls we have to do for work.
Being comfortable doesn’t only mean stealing your boyfriend’s oversized t-shirts and shorts, it can mean luxuriating in leopard print, flopping around in florals, relaxing while wrapped up in rainbows, or laying back in black. There are SO many great loungewear options out these to suit all sorts of styles and budgets.
3. Step Up Your Scarf Game
One of the best things about coming into a new cold season is getting to find that new scarf that matches your vibe that year.
Of course, while the weather is still reasonably warm, pashminas are a great lightweight classic option that can add something a little extra and different to your outfit and can be used as a cover up as things get cooler outside.
A chunky knit scarf in a neutral shade is sure to go with anything you may have in your wardrobe. If you’re worried about your scarf being blown away in the wind (RIP black knit scarf) then a knitted snood may be what you’re looking for. They’ll keep your neck warm, while also taking up less room in coats, and there’s less risk of them being claimed by the wind during a walk.
Scarves are the ultimate must-have accessory during the fall and throughout winter
4. Fall Means LAYERS
Layering at any time of the year is essential in some states where you can have several seasons’ worth of weather in a matter of hours. However, the fall is the perfect time to experiment with the fine art of layering your clothes.
Not only does this have a practical factor to it, but it also means that you get to experiment with your capsule closet, too.
A capsule closet is an inventory of up to 30 closet essentials that are used to create a huge range of looks for loads of different occasions. It may consist of; short sleeved t-shirts, long sleeved t-shirts, different pants and jeans, sweaters, skirts, jeans etc, that can all be worn together or on their own.
It may also mean searching for a couple of coats- warmer coats for when you’re out walking , and a lighter, yet stylish jacket which can be worn in your car on your way to the store or to meet friends (at a distance) Gone will be the days of buying random ‘must have’ items on a whim. With your capsule closet, you can layer up (and down) to your heart’s content.
5. Step Your Boot Game Up
The fall is a wonderful time of year to let off some steam at your local state park, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t go and get that perfect instagram shot of the trees changing color and feel the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet in style.
Fall 2020 seems to be all about the combat boots, and we’re all here for it. Chunky soles with laces seem to be a wardrobe staple that can be worn with dresses and leggings or knitted hosiery, jeans, or skirts. They’re hugely versatile shoes that can be worn throughout the winter, too.
Laces not so much your thing? Chelsea boots are a great alternative- with their elastic paneling at the sides, these boots are the ultimate finisher to the fall outfit.
If walking around in puddles is what you want, wellington boots keep your feet dry, and they don’t have to look like grandma taking the dog for a walk, either. You can get plain matte finish, shiny glitter boots, and even wellington boots with a sock finish at the top to keep your feet nice and toasty during your wet weather walking.
Bonus: Cozy up Your Home
It wouldn’t be fall without giving your house a little seasonal makeover, too. As things get cozy at home, you may start to want to spend more evenings drinking hot drinks and watching your favorite feel good movie – ultimate self care, in our humble opinion!
This means getting things prepared for this very special time. We’re talking chunky knit blankets, and new throw cushions to cuddle up to as you zoom with your friends. Why not get yourself a new coffee cup to draw in the aesthetic, too?
For a simple touch and a little glimpse toward sparkly Christmas time, get some fairy lights going as well as an autumnal spiced scented candle to really bring it all together.
If you like the idea of having a fire but your home won’t allow it, check out this fireplace video to bring in a cozy evening feeling without having to risk calling the fire brigade, either.
The fall is a special time of the year when the old fades away and the promise of Christmas is near. What are your go-to style essentials during the fall?
