We are living in what could be called the weirdest times in the past fifty years. We are all currently in a stage of isolation, and that means that we are dealing with being told to stay at home and don’t move unless it’s essential. As a sociable race, we’re not doing well with that rule!
Anxiety is something that most of us deal with at some stage or another, and it’s nothing fun to cope with. It makes you feel scared, worried, nervous and more, and anxiety creeps up on you and makes you feel inadequate. When you’re in isolation, your mental health can easily take a big hit. There’s no way to get out for an extended period. There are no long and lengthy walks to see friends. There’s no socialising to distract yourself from your own thoughts, and there’s no getting out and having fun in the same way you did before Coronavirus swept the planet. Instead, you have to try to get on with life with minimal movement, very limited human interaction and supporting yourself.
So, what can you do about anxiety that is exacerbated due to isolation? There are plenty of suggestions out there (and we’ve got a list for you below), but while you are wondering about those, have you considered the purpose of a weighted blanket and how it could help you to relax? Anxiety affects so many people in different ways, and you must learn how to manage your specific stress, especially during isolation. With that in mind, here are a few things that you could do about your anxiety at this time.
1. Accept It
It’s a hard thing to do, isn’t it? Anxiety makes you feel out of control, and it can be a difficult thing to manage. The thing is, you shouldn’t have to manage it. You need to accept the anxiety that you’re feeling right now and let it wash over you. It’s okay to feel anxious about Coronavirus; this is a global pandemic that is causing mass layoffs, homelessness and a plummeting economy.
Anxiety is a natural response to the unknown. You have no idea whether this is going to be a long-term situation for the world, or if it’s going to go as quickly as it came. Your anxiety is a natural response to the situation at hand, so, learning to accept it is a good idea.

There is such a thing as too much news. Sometimes, being online is not a good thing, and while information is power, in some situations, information is overwhelming. Panic happens when rumours spread, and misinformation is shared. The media love a sensation, and while the pandemic is a scary one in general, it doesn’t help your anxiety when you have your phone and internet screaming death, destruction, doom at you wherever you are.
Watching all the coverage is enough to set off your anxiety and make you feel like you should be rocking in the corner. So, switch off the TV, turn off your phone and stop reading the sensation – you must give yourself some space.
3. Protect Yourself & Your Family
Did you know that the faster we all pay attention to self-isolation and social distancing rules, the quicker this will be over? Playing by the rules is how you win a game, and while a pandemic isn’t a game, per se, it still has rules. So, listen to the rules as set by the government and know that you are doing everything in your power to help this pandemic to disappear. Keep your hands clean, wipe down surfaces and your groceries after handling them, and you can stay in control of your response to this situation.
4. Learn To Feel Gratitude
Making a list of all the things that you are grateful to have is a smart way to spend your time. Sure, you may have had to cancel your trip, and you may be working from home for the foreseeable future, but it’s an excellent way to remind yourself of what you have got. It’s so easy to wallow in anxiety and worries about the future, and it’s this that makes it hard to concentrate on the good things that are still in your life right now. You may be working from home, but at least you have a job. You may be stuck inside your house, but at least you’re safe inside it!
5. Virtual Therapy
Most doctor’s offices are introducing video appointments and conferencing services. Therapists are shifting their practices to online mode, and they can offer you every support you’ve been missing out on. Therapy can make a big difference in the way that you feel mentally, so don’t be afraid to get online and get some help. Your therapist could give you tips on coping with the lockdown situation as well as advice on how a weighted blanket could help you. The professionals are there for a reason: utilize their help!
Get yourself online and find a video on YouTube that teaches you how to meditate. Breathing is a simple solution to anxiety, but your anxiety could be making you hold your breath more than usual. Taking a moment just to feel your lungs fill with oxygen can make a big difference in the way that you feel. Anxiety is hard to get on top of, but you can find the right help when you take a minute, slow down and breathe. It’ll all work out.
7. Get Stuck Into Routine
It’s hard to maintain a routine when you are stuck inside the house, but if you do it right, you can keep the panic under control. Set yourself working hours, allocate time to exercise in the home or outside and set your meal times, too. You need to give yourself blocks of time to feel prepared and ready. The more control you can give yourself, the better off you will be.
