9 Things You Need To Prepare For Babies

Last updated:

Are you expecting a baby? Congratulations! Babies are such amazing tiny humans. They bring so much happiness and love to your life, and they’re the best company when you’re feeling down. However, one thing that can be really tough about having a baby is preparing for them. There’s so much to do before they arrive. Here are some things you’ll need to prepare for your new bundle of joy.

A Car Seat

Your baby’s safety is your main priority. Make sure you have a safe, sturdy car seat to bring them home in.

A Place To Call Their Own

Of course, it’ll be nice for them to sleep in bed with you while they’re still little, but before that happens, make sure their room has the necessities. A crib or bassinet and a changing table are some of the basics. But to really create a beautiful space, look for ideas on Pinterest and check out the Baby Furniture Buying Guide: What Do You Really Need For The Nursery? This way, when they arrive, everything will be set up and will help relieve some stress from your shoulders.

Diapers

On top of your list should be all three of these things: diapers, wipes, and diaper cream. If your baby has sensitive skin, make sure that you check the labels and ensure that it doesn’t have any fragrance infused. And stock-up beforehand! Newborn babies go through a large number of diapers in their early months. Of course, it’s also very important that you learn how to properly change diapers. This may sound easy at first, but there are many things to consider, like are you putting the diaper on the right way, or is it too tight? Also, while busy changing the diaper, your baby wet themselves without warning. For some babies, though, these types of accidents happen from time to time, so don’t worry if this happens more often than not. Just make sure you have lots of wipes nearby and stay prepared with an extra set of clothes just in case. Also, remember that having fun toys like stuffed animals around can make this chore easier and quicker.

Baby Clothes

It’s important that your newborn always feels cozy while snoozing. So make sure you stock up on some soft onesies or pajamas before they arrive. These include bibs and socks.

Nursing Bras

If you plan to breastfeed, make sure your body is ready for it by getting a supportive nursing bra. You’ll need this right after giving birth, so don’t forget about them and the nipple cream while preparing your hospital bag.

Car Seat Cover

If the area you live in is known for less than favourable weather, having one will come in handy. This not only keeps the baby warm but also safe by blocking out any harmful UV rays. Make sure you get one that is the right size for your car seat, though. Otherwise, it won’t be able to fit properly and will not provide adequate protection.

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor is great for making sure they are safe while they sleep. You can put it in the room and watch them on a little screen as they slumber away. Also, it will give you peace of mind. Some baby monitors can even monitor your baby’s heartbeat and breathing and will activate an alarm if they stop breathing. Just do some research beforehand because all monitors aren’t created equal.

Diaper Bag

This is great for moms on the go. There are a multitude of different diaper bags on the market for you to choose from. Make sure you get one that fits your style and personality; otherwise, these tend to be pretty expensive, so make sure it’s worth the investment. Choose one that’s not too bulky but has tons of pockets to store all your baby essentials. There are even reusable diaper bags which once your baby is past the need for a diaper bag, you can use it as a regular purse again!

Baby Proofing

Baby proofing should commence as soon as you find out your baby will make their arrival in the near future. The first items should include outlet covers since babies are curious creatures by nature and love to stick fingers where they don’t belong. Also, consider latches for cabinets under sinks that contain cleaning supplies, etc. Rather safe than sorry because accidents can happen in a matter of seconds.

Preparing for a baby is more than just finding the perfect crib and shopping for cute little outfits. It also involves making sure that you have everything else necessary to take care of your newborn. On top of those already mentioned, it includes other aspects such as to get insurance or sign up at your local health center; make an appointment with their pediatrician; research nearby hospitals and clinics if they do not live close by; organize (and clean) storage space in case they need it later on down the line. It might seem very overwhelming, but take a breath and tackle one thing at a time. You got this, mom!
