9 Ways to Sleep On A Flight

Last updated:

Trying to sleep on a flight can seem almost impossible! These 9 suggestions can help you sleep on a plane comfortably and enjoy your next vacation!

1. Go Caffeine-Free

Caffeine should be avoided before bedtime, just like any other day. Avoid caffeine before your flight if you want to sleep through it. To stay hydrated, swap your coffee for a bottle of water.

2. Don’t Overeat

Heavy meals, especially carb-heavy meals, can cause indigestion and discomfort during travel. Choose your airport lunch sensibly to avoid bloating. Avoid discomfort and sleep better.

3. Wear Comfy Clothes

Traveling comfortably means dressing comfortably. Wearing loose-fitting, comfy clothing will help you relax. You’ll sleep better if you’re relaxed! The most comfortable pants in the world would be ideal.

4. Reserve Your Seat

There’s nothing worse than having your neighbor wake you up mid-flight to use the bathroom. If you can, reserve a window seat. So no one has to wake you up to get in or out of their seat.

Book seats that recline. Seats in the emergency row and front of the bathrooms don’t always go backward. Also, avoid the high-traffic area near the facilities if you are a light sleeper.

5. Pack Some Airplane Sleeping Necessities

To help you sleep on a plane, you should prepare your body and environment for sleep. Pack these four flight needs for a good night’s sleep.

6. Have A Snooze

If you just bring one item for sleeping on a plane, make it a sleep mask! A decent eye mask will block out light and help your body relax. An eye mask can be the difference between sleeping well and barely sleeping.

7. A Good Neck Pillow

A nice neck pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep. It will relieve neck strain and prevents your head from slipping as you sleep. This neck pillow is robust but comfortable.

8. Bring Some of The Comforts From Home With You

Packing home comfort is a great way to relax on a flight. Pack a warm blanket to cuddle up with before bed. This folded blanket is an excellent compact choice. If you don’t need the blanket, it zips up and becomes a pillow!

If you don’t have room for a blanket in your luggage, a warm large sweater, knit cardigan, or blanket scarf like this would do. So you can use it as a blanket during the flight.

9. Earplugs/Headphones Are A Must

Finally, you can sleep on an aircraft if you can filter out the noise. Earplugs are a great option. I use these to shut out the incessant buzz of conversation and engines.

Alternatively, if you want to relax with your favorite music, bring noise-canceling headphones. Ideal for travel, these headphones are noise-canceling with quick charging.
