All About That Green: The Benefits of Green Smoothies

Written by Alanna Gardner

With more people exploring detoxing, body cleansing and clean eating it’s hard to figure out where to start on your quest to get fit. One easy way for you to see a change in your overall health is to incorporate a lifestyle change that will provide you long lasting results. Something I’ve found to be simple, yet effective is drinking green smoothies.  If you didn’t know, green smoothies are one of the simplest ways to boost your overall health and wellness. Drinking at least one a day can help boost your immunity, energy levels and aid in weight loss. We love the simplicity of smoothies so much at TheUrbanRealist that we featured a recipe of our own not too long ago.

I first stumbled across the delicious concoctions when I started following the Instagram of Simple Green Smoothies. After browsing their page filled with tasty looking smoothies I decided to find out more. Jen and Jadah of Simplegreensmoothies.com, started their website to spread the word about the benefits of the ultimate healthy fast food: Green Smoothies. So what exactly is a green smoothie? It’s a smoothie that is made out of fruits, veggies, a liquid base such as water or almond milk and some optional nutrient rich add ons like chia or flax seeds. The green in green smoothies comes from it being jam packed with leafy greens like spinach and kale. The smoothies provide antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients that can help slow down the aging process as well as help you fight against sickness.

Since I couldn’t work out as hard as I used to after my open heart surgery, I had to find ways to remain healthy while gaining my physical endurance back. So I turned to revamping my diet and added green smoothies into the mix. I tried and LOVED a few of their free (YES I SAID FREE) recipes they had on their site so I decided to sign up for their 30 Day challenge back in July. I thought it would be difficult and that I wouldn’t be able to stick with it but I surprisingly did and found that it really improved my overall health. I was more energized and my body transformed as well. My stomach was flatter (without working out as much as I used to) and my nails and skin were radiant, not to mention I wasn’t craving junk food anymore. I literally was glowing from the inside out, no lie. Since then I have been an advocate of green smoothies; telling everyone from my friends to my family and now you lovely Urban Realist readers about the benefits of just drinking one a day.

If you are interested in seeing if being a part of the green smoothie gang is for you here is a recipe from the ladies at Simple Green smoothies called the Beginner’s Luck:

If you find that you enjoy that, I encourage you to sign up for their 30 Day challenge that starts October 1st. Even if you start late sign up anyway, you’ll receive all you need to start improving your health and making green smoothies!
