Last weekend, the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) Bass Camp opened a place for creative people to come together to create, collaborate, and celebrate at Bonnaroo Music Festival for the first time. With Bonnaroo and RBMA both being leaders in the music community, the partnership led to a weekend of creative and inspirational expression through music. Over the course of the weekend from 12 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., RBMA artists took the stage in Centeroo. Francois K, hailing from New York, started out the Bass Camp Friday and was followed on Saturday by Dirty South hip-hop legend Mannie Fresh and Mystikal, a surprise guest. Earlier on Saturday, Mannie gave a public lecture on the Solar Stage at the festival to an audience of one thousand chronicling his journey in life as a producer, which was hosted by Jeff “Chairman” Mao.
Speakers at the RBMA Bass Camp included Thundercat, Francois K, and Vance Powell, lead engineer at Blackbird Studio and Third Man Records, who all gave private lectures daily. This inspiring and innovative program held at Bonnaroo was run like a miniature version of the full Red Bull Music Academy experience to be held in Tokyo later in the year.
