COMING THIS FALL: Drive-In Theater in Wynwood, Miami

Written by S.Renée

Anyone into movies and a warm feeling of nostalgia will have an opportunity to embrace it all this fall when the Blue Starlite mini drive-in theater pulls into Wynwood this October. The boutique drive-in was launched and debuted by owner Josh Frank in 2009 in Austin, Tx., to much success. What makes “The Blue” unique? The intimate experience presented by the theater, prepared to house just a handful of cars on any given evening. Frank wanted to give the viewing experience a twist, bringing it down to a more “human scale,” and allowing attendees a warmer, more friendly opportunity than the huge screens.

After 4 years of success half way across the country, many wonder why Frank chose Miami to be the next destination for “The Blue.” via The Miami New Times:

“My wife was born and raised in Miami, and wanted to move back here for the next phase of our lives.” But it’s also fertile film ground, he explained. “Miami’s a big, metropolitan city, [especially] compared to Austin, with lots of art. But it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of small entertainment businesses. In Austin, there’s tons of them, which is where I got my chops. I had a lot of competition … In Miami, it’s a huge city with tons of bars and restaurants and art, but [not as many] small, indie film experiences.”

In order to “respect the godfathers” and not step on any toes, “The Blue” will feature classics, such as The Goonies and Grease, versus the indie films screened in Austin, since neighboring O Cinema and other local film houses already cover that market. The location and exact start date are not yet confirmed, but if you’re as excited as I am about this new Miami development, sign up for updates at their website: www.miamiurbandrivein.com.
