Most of the teeny-boppers these days have been little worth knowing for more than a season. But the magical union between Will Smith and Jada Pinkett has ultimately created something interesting that can only be described as an unpredicted breath of fresh air in music this year.
Jaden, the well-known Twitter philosopher, surprised the world by releasing a video for his song “Fast,” granting him a great amount of attention. To my own surprise, I found myself admitting that he’s actually a pretty good rapper. Jaden has a unique flow with insightful lyrics, creating anticipation for his artistic maturity. During his latest random episode, he created the app “Jaden Experience,” which allows his fans to stream and download his new album, Cool Tape No. 2.
Jaden’s younger sister, Willow, is also creating a large fan-base of her own. She’s currently a special guest on the Enter the Void Tour alongside Jhene Aiko and SZA. With the release of her EP “3” she’s creating a soulful wave only a Smith can apparently create. Interestingly enough, Willow cites Eryka Badu as an inspiration to her art. Willow combines vocal purity with lyrics that seem to come straight from pages of a personal journal. And I couldn’t help but become a fan.
In late October, the siblings performed at The FADER FORT establishing their support for one another, as well as showcasing their very real talent. Willow and Jaden deserve the applause; they made an unbelievable transition from “Justin-Bieber-esque-pop” to a fascinating organic style that urban culture has come to love so much. My advice? Stay on your toes. They definitely have a flare for surprises and have the potential for promising futures. There’s still reason to remain cautiously optimistic – remember, Miley Cyrus took a huge turn for the worse. But as of now, the Smith appeal has everyone’s attention.
