What’s the most forgotten about room in most houses? For many people, it’s the basement. Typically it’s just used as a place to store junk and excess clutter.

Even when it’s used a den or a place for kids to play in, more often then not it’s full of discarded objects and boxes.

While extra storage is always nice, don’t you think it’s time to start putting your basement to good use?  Well, if you use the following tips, you might be inclined to spend a lot more time in it!

1. Waterproof It.

Basements are often at a very high risk of flooding and suffering from damp and mold. Because of this, it’s worth taking the time to ensure it is completely waterproof.

There are a few things you can do. First of all, it’s worth taking a look at the flooring available from www.dmx1step.com as this can serve a number of purposes. Not only will it help keep the floor moisture-free but it will also soundproof them.

Secondly, it’s a good idea to paint the walls with a sealant or an anti-mold and anti-damp paint. If this all sounds like too much effort for you, there are lots of companies that specialize in waterproofing.

If you get in touch with them, they will be able to send out someone who can do all the hard work for you!

2. Improve The Airflow.

Now it’s time to consider the airflow in your basement. These rooms can often feel quite stuffy because air gets trapped in them and quickly becomes stale.

If your air feels like this all the time, there is no way you will want to spend time in the room! So, consider one of the following options.

Adding a duct fan can help to send warm air from the main areas of the house into the basement, so it won’t be so cold all the time.

A ceiling fan can help circulate and freshen up all this air too. It might also be worth adding some form of ventilation if possible.

3. Seal All The Pipes And Wires.

In most properties, the main wires and pipes will often run through the basement. This is because it is the least-used of all rooms, so most builders think they will be out of the way down there.

However, they might not be efficiently sealed or insulated. Firstly, you will need to ensure they are all correctly sealed as this will minimize the risk of leaks.

As well as that, you should source some pipe insulation, such as from www.pipelagging.com, to ensure that water won’t freeze in them during the winter. If it does, it could cause the pipes to burst.

Once you have carried out all the above jobs, you will be in a much better position to turn your basement into a living space. I’m sure you will then use it a lot more than what you used to!
