Pop singer and hair goddess Lorde turns 18 today, but it looks like it’s the rest of us that are the real winners here. Imagine our surprise, and pleasure, when we got to wake up this morning to the newly released video for “Yellow Flicker Beat.” The song is just one of a few the singer penned for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay–Part 1.
While we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see how the track plays out in the film, the Emily Kai Bock directed video shows the singer just as dark and brooding as ever, Bock’s camera buzzing around the singer’s movements throughout it.
In a post on her tumblr, Lorde says “when i was dreaming it up, i wasn’t thinking too hard about story or a specific narrative, more a mood; a harsh, crackling heat. yellow flicker beat is about katniss realizing that things have crossed a line, about being pushed to the edge and right over it…[Her character] is a shapeshifter, full of intensity and impulse, kind of like katniss.”
