THEURBANREALIST’s HOTTEST WEEK EVER: Philly Edition
Written by Whitney Blomquist
Last week was the hottest week in Philadelphia so far this year. Here’s how I tried to escape the heat when it became unbearable- Instagram style!
Monday- My boyfriend (Brock) and I hit up Pub & Kitchen’s Happy Hour for some refreshing drinks and delicious snacks. One of my Top 5 Philly Happy Hours!
Tuesday- I stopped by Food & Friends to build a 6-pack and pick up some snacks to eat while we watched Django Unchained… again. You can get 10% off mixed 6 packs here!
Wednesday- Stopped by the Farmers Market in Schuylkill River Park on the way home from the dog run. Volunteers set up the market every Wednesday from 3-7 pm and sell organic and local fruit and veggies.
Thursday- We hit another of my favorite Happy Hours at El Rey. I love the atmosphere at El Rey- it is always busy but not overwhelmingly so. It was the perfect way to relax after another scorching hot day.
Friday- We spent Friday morning at Wissahickon’s Valley Park. They have an awesome dog beach right off Kitchens Lane in Philadelphia. Our pup has so much fun swimming and playing with other dogs in the creek when we take her here.

Saturday- Brock and I headed down to our home town in Southern Maryland to visit with some family and friends and hang out at the pool for the day.
Sunday- Despite the heat, we couldn’t stay away from Philly long. We got back just in time for lunch at Almaz Café. They have awesome smoothies and amazing Ethiopian dishes!
TIKIL GOMEN- Lightly spiced vegetable stew of cabbage, carrots and potatoes.
KIK-ALCHIA – Yellow split peas flavored with turmeric, green peppers and various ethiopian spices.
Misir- Split red lentils cooked in berbere sauce and fine herbs blended with chopped onions.
SHIRO- Mixed legumes prepared with ginger root, rue seed, bishops weed and garlic cooked with berbere sauce.
