Things to Consider When It Comes to E-Commerce

Last updated:

If you want to build an online store, there is a lot that you are going to need to consider, so let’s take a look at some of the different features:

Payment options

Look for a provider that currently accepts the likes of Stripe, PayPal and Square as payment methods. These are pretty standard across the board with most websites or store builders.

Some solutions enable you to customize your checkout process, for example, you can send a confirmation email or track orders. One of the bonus points about some tools is that they don’t charge transaction fees. This is a big plus if you can find it! It’s always critical to factor in all costs, from finding a cheap VPS to funding your domain name.

Think about what your customers want when it comes to making sales.  Most customers would like the option to be able to login with their Facebook or Google accounts or register a new account to check their orders, receive discounts, etc. It adds a personal touch to an online store, something which some builders offer and some don’t.

Can you upload multiple products at once? If not, this could be very time-consuming if you have a lot of products. Platforms without this feature may be good for the likes of artists or photographers, as opposed to selling clothes or other products.

Abandoned Cart Recovery

This is surely a feature that most people have heard of. Guess what? Not all solutions offer abandoned cart recovery features. How can an eCommerce builder not offer this?

If a customer starts shopping with you, adding things to their basket or cart, but then decides to leave your site for whatever reason, you can follow this action up with an email or offers to entice them to complete their purchase.

This is a big business sales opportunity, and for people selling products, sales should be a priority. But, this doesn’t seem to be the case with some tools, so always look for this. It’s like they don’t realise they are advertising themselves as an eCommerce builder.

How many themes are offered? Make sure the themes themselves are modern and professional. Make sure you can switch theme at any time.

Make sure all of the themes are mobile-friendly, which is expected in the world we live in. Mobile optimisation is vital for any website or online store.

If you want to update your online store with images, you’ll need to upload your own. The only other alternative is if there are any stock image libraries to browse, and if you want to edit your images, find out if you can do this or if you’ll have to do this through code. The latter is not ideal if you’re a beginner!

Make sure the themes are not very restrictive, as some today lack a lot of creative freedom. The last thing you want is for your theme to end up holding you back.
