With over 36% of the world’s population owning a smartphone as of 2018, it goes without saying that the power of photography is literally in the palms of our hands at all times – even when we travel.
In fact, social media sites like Instagram and Facebook are littered with pictures taken from airplane windows and the scenery of foreign lands, proving that photography is a must-do activity no matter where you go. However, when it comes to taking better pictures while on your travels, improving your skills isn’t as difficult as it sounds.
1. Don’t be afraid of special effects.
You might have played around with special effects on your camera or phone before at home, but trying something new while on your travels (or after your travels) can make a good picture look even more amazing.
Despite where you go in the world, one of the most stunning and popular photography special effects is Bokeh – the effect of blurring the background of a picture and making the focus of the image sharper. While this effect is created by using a fast lens among other techniques, Bokeh can be easily done on most newer models of smartphones with just a few clicks.
Bokeh is one of the easiest ways to step up your photography game – and in terms of travel photography, using the effect can give your pictures a newfound life with the variety of scenes and backgrounds available on your journey.
2. Displaying your travel photos.
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen my gallery wall in my living room. I shot everyone of the images (except the one I’m in myself). What most people don’t realize is almost all of those shots were taken on my phone.
A photo collage can be a useful way of showing off multiple photos at once, which is great when it comes to travel photography because you’ll more than likely have more photos than you’ll know what to do with. Not to mention that the collages can be shared digitally, or displayed in a frame.
There are more options to consider when it comes to displaying your shots – one of which is by scrapbooking. This is not only a great way to save your travel memories, but honestly the act of creating a scrapbook has a somewhat peaceful quality- when I was in high school scrapbooking was my favorite hobby .
3. Take your camera everywhere you go.
Traveling is about seeing and experiencing new places, people, and things, and for that reason, it’s important to take your camera everywhere you go, no matter where you’re headed.
Bringing your camera along can not only allow you to capture any moment that you wish, but can lead to you taking pictures of things you otherwise wouldn’t have.
Whether you choose to bring along your nicest camera, smartphone camera, or disposable, bringing it along can allow you to step outside your comfort zone a bit and live in the moment all at the same time.
While traveling can be a wonderful and relaxing experience, bringing along your camera can be a wonderful way to document the trip. And, by improving your photography skills by taking your camera with you everywhere on your journey, using special effects, and displaying your photos in different ways, you’re sure to have memories from your travels that’ll last a lifetime.
