4 Non-Traditional Activities to Bring in the New Year
Written by Suzanna Stein
With the New Year arriving quickly, many of us are beginning to make plans for the big night (and day)! New Year’s is a time to start fresh with new adventures, new goals, and new opportunities. Why not celebrate with one of these non-traditional New Year’s activities?
1. New Year’s Eve Aquarium Sleepover
Aquariums all over the country, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Aquarium of the Pacific, are holding sleepovers for people of all ages on New Year’s Eve! Instead of staying at home, spend the night with the fishes and get ready for an awesome start to the New Year.
2. Polar Bear Swim
If you live in NYC, head to Coney Island and take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean on January 1st during the Polar Bear Swim. Every year hundreds of swimmers see how far they can swim in the freezing water. This event is fun and completely free! Don’t live in New York? Don’t worry; cities all over the country hold their own versions of the Polar Bear Plunge.
3. Romp with the Beasts!
Dance with wild animals and spend the night in a safari tent at Safari West located in Santa Rosa, California. Each year Safari West holds Romp with the Beasts!, a night filled with champagne, wild animals, dinner, and dancing. Such a fun way to bring in the New Year!
4. Emerald Nuts Midnight Run
Celebrate the New Year in Shape with the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in New York. The event starts at 10pm with live performances and a costume party, followed by the four mile run starting at 11:59pm. Runners and non-runners alike are welcome to compete for the prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!
No matter what you decide to do to celebrate the New Year, be sure to stay safe and stay warm. Tell us below how you will be celebrating the New Year and what new opportunities, adventures, and goals you are excited for in 2014!
