What To Do When You’re in a Job You Hate

We’ve all been there. When we are making our way up the career ladder there can be times when we have to do things that we don’t like. But what happens when you end up finding a job and, for whatever reason, you stay? Being in a job for money or for a worry that you won’t be able to find another one means you get stuck. And when you get stuck in one job you end up resenting it or hating it. While many people don’t like something about their job when you really hate it and it’s taking up most of your thoughts what can you do to make this easier?

1. Is It The Environment, Not The Job?

Sometimes we can’t differentiate between the environment and our duties because they become inextricably linked. If you work in a hostile workplace environment, after a while everything becomes associated with that sensation you feel as soon as you walk through the front doors. If it’s possible, try and move somewhere else within the company. You need to remember that, rather than quitting, if you’ve got skills that are transferable to another department, start to put the feelers out and see if there is an opportunity for you somewhere else. When we work in a specific environment it doesn’t help us to stay there because we end up becoming part of the toxicity.

2. Be Proactive With Your Job Hunt

The temptation could be to quit but when you think about quitting all of the time you could very easily start to vent on social media and you may immediately regret it. Instead of taking the leap, thinking that any job would be better than this, you’ve got to make sure that you calculate your escape plan. At the same time, you’ve got to look at your own feelings. You may very well just be going through a tough time. And when you start to think that quitting your job would be the best way forward you fixate upon this, but if you don’t have another job waiting you will struggle financially. At least you’re earning a steady paycheck!

3. Focus On Your Own Health

If you are going through a tough time, think about the things that keep you happy. Go to the gym or keep fit doing something you love and when you start to destress this is when there is more clarity. Focus on your own health and you may find a solution but also realize that work is not the be-all and end-all. Focus on your own health and you will feel happier. It will also give you more mental strength in order to look for the next step of your life.

When we’re in a job that we don’t like the temptation can be to jump ship but it’s far better for us to remember that everybody hates their job on occasion. It’s not 100% perfect for anybody, and when we are in a place that we don’t like anymore or we’ve stopped enjoying working with the people, we have to focus on our own happiness. But jumping ship right away isn’t the best course of action. Prepare your escape plan.
